GIVEAWAY | LE FROID: NEXT BIG COFFEE CONCEPT

23.11.14

It seems like coffee will never be out of style. Actually, I think there is even more room for innovative coffee concepts. Especially in Amsterdam, you see creative and organic coffee bars pop up everywhere lately. Le Froid is not a coffee bar (yet), but is the most innovative coffee concept in years. This coffee, made by Hidde Stokvis en Job Wassenberg, is brewed cold, which gives it a pretty distinguishing taste. Le Froid's coffee concentrate can be used like real coffee, or when cooking up experimental dishes and cocktails. How cool is that? Hidde and Job have written out a bunch of recipes for you, so you can put Le Froid to use correctly. I was really curious how two twenty-something-guys came up with the concept of cold brew coffee. And so I asked Hidde Stokvis.

TWO GUYS AND COLD BREW COFFEE. HOW DOES THAT WORK?
It first started in 2014. At that moment, we had a workspace in Delft where multiple students worked on different projects and assignments. I accidentally stumbled upon a bottle of Graddy's Cold Brew Coffee on a design blog. I really loved the bottle, but cold brew coffee did not ring a bell. Together with Job, we started exploring the production of cold brew coffee and learned how to make it ourselves. Cold brew was not available on the Dutch market yet, and so we decided to have a go. For a while we produced the coffee only in small amounts in our Delft workspace, but when we found out that a friend of ours worked at Moyee Coffee we really turned it into a business. One year later, Le Froid is growing and we cannot wait to see what the future holds!

WHO SHOULD DEFINITELY BUY LE FROID?
Coffee lovers in general I guess. People who love great quality coffee, people who crave iced coffee every once in a while and people who love to experiment in the kitchen. You can use Le Froid for all of these purposes, that is what makes it such a fun product. The best asset of cold brewed coffee is that it has a silky taste, nothing like the bitterness that you would expect from a normally cooled espresso. Le Froid really does not taste like anything else in the coffee department.

WHO IS MARTINE - THE BOTTLE'S NAME -?
Martine is Fernands big love. She moves in 1889, because her father finds a job at the world expo in Paris. Fernand is left behind broken hearted in Saint Mear de Gurçon and decides to save up and visit Martine in Paris. We write the story from Fernand's view. Our first bottle, a cold brew coffee from Moyee coffee's Ethiopian Limu bean, is named after Martine. The rest of the story is to be found on the bottles that we will produce in the future.

WHAT ARE LE FROID'S PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
We do not really have the luxury yet to really specify where we are going in the next couple of years. All our attention and effort goes into selling the best cold brew coffee right now. We are experimenting with different production methods, like with fermenting the cold brew to make it carbonated - really like the way beer is produced - to find interesting new uses. We also started a brew off between ourselves - Job and Hidde - to see who can come up with the best winter cold brew. The winner will be announced on December 10 at 5PM at KeK in Delft, so if you are in the neighbourhood: Join us and taste a free sample of our winter cold brew!
